TATU: TEENS AGAINST TOBACCO USE

Purpose of T.A.T.U.

To use your commitment and skills as a tobacco-free teen with younger children so they will make the healthy choice to stay tobacco free and to be an advocate for tobacco control in your community.

Facts About Youth and Tobacco—Why is tobacco education important?

  • Smokers start smoking as children. 80% of smokers started before age 18.
  • 3,000 teens start smoking each day—of those, ONE THOUSAND WILL DIE FROM TOBACCO RELATED DISEASES!
  • Tobacco kills more people than AIDS, murder, alcohol abuse and drunk driving…COMBINED.
  • Nicotine, the stimulant in tobacco, is more addictive than cocaine or heroin.
  • Tobacco is the only product that when used exactly as intended causes addiction and disease and kills the customer.

LIES, LIES, LIES!

  • Tobacco won’t hurt me!
  • It relaxes me.
  • I exercise so it doesn’t matter.
  • Tobacco is cool.
  • I can quit whenever I want.
  • Chewing tobacco is safer.
  • Tobacco is not a drug.
  • Smoking keeps my weight down.
  • I’m not hurting anyone else.
  • I smoke because I choose to.

Be an Advocate: Exercise Your Power for Tobacco Control…You can make a difference in your community. Organize your friends, family and younger children to help you achieve some of the following changes:

  • Demand tobacco-free public places, including schools, sports arenas, restaurants and malls.
  • Require enforcement laws prohibiting tobacco sales to anyone under the age of 18.
  • Urge regulation of nicotine as a drug.
  • Support restrictions on tobacco advertising and promotions to include billboards, special promotional items and tobacco sponsorships.
  • Identify the important issues in your community.
  • Identify who you need to contact to effect change.

We will bring the program to your community or church!
